Gov. Palin more a token than a feminist

Read ArticleArticle Source: The San Francisco Chronicle

Election 2008 is the gift that keeps on giving to American identity politics. First Hillary swept in the hoary 1960s "debate" about feminism. Then Barack reminded Americans that we remain illiterate on the subject of race. And now - just when I thought I was safe - Sarah Palin has somehow turned Republicans into feminists and the rest of us into sexists.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Excerpt:

One of the reasons why "Troopergate" is so compelling to the public is because the details - Palin dismissing the state public safety commissioner because he would not fire a man she believed had wronged her sister - paint that stereotypical portrait of a woman so in thrall to her emotions that she cannot govern effectively. If one of the ideas behind feminism is that women should be able to compete based on their abilities, then Palin's record here is not convincing.

Equally disturbing to me is that the judge in her sister's divorce case had to sanction the entire Palin family (Sarah, Todd AND the kids) from badmouthing the ex-brother in law to his DAUGHTER. They were poisoning her mind against him, and he was disturbed by it and said if it continued, he would grant sole custody to the ex-brother in law.

What kind of person gets their children involved in adult family affairs like that?

What, then, is "unfeminist" about Palin? Start with her selection. Even her supporters do not deny that she would not have been chosen had she been a man

The Democratic ticket runs the risk of being trapped here. Remember Ferraro? If Obama were a white man he would not have been able to run. Never before have the issues become so convoluted that the public has no better chance of understanding this election than they have understanding a game of Cricket.

It is challenging, especially after being bombarded with the sight of so many "Coldest State, Hottest Governor" buttons during the Republican Convention, to avoid the feeling that another reason McCain picked Palin was for the chance to have something easy on the eyes around during his policy meetings.

Try impossible. Feminism has never been about hiring someone for their appearance.

But here's the thing.

This is the first article I've seen even mention what's frustrated me about Palin since she was picked: she wasn't picked just because she's a woman. She was picked because she's a pretty woman. She's young and good-looking and she's attractive on camera. Sure, she appeals to the extreme right wing base, but she is in no way competent to assume control of the country. She's just pretty.

The article mentions Kay Bailey Hutchison and Condaleeza Rice. Elizabeth Dole and Christine Todd Whitman were also options -- my god, Christine Todd Whitman, former governor of New Jersey, former EPA director (yeah, there were scandals, but she had a hell of a lot more experience). Hell, Olympia Snowe would've been an awesome choice.

But they're not perky and cute.

No. She's not. She's not Cheney. As much as I absolutely despise Cheney, at least Cheney had some substance to him, some background, some contacts in industry and politics, some reason why he would benefit Bush's ticket.

This is my point: Palin brings absolutely zip to McCain's ticket other than a pretty face and a jolt of media attention. Hey, it's working! The media's eating it right up. She's an instant celebrity, to the point at which no one gives a damn about McCain anymore and even Palin thinks the ticket has her name at the top. But that's all she brings. Nothing of substance. She was brought onto the ticket not because she, as a person, has something of value to contribute, but because she's a pretty girl.

And that's kind of the antithesis of feminism.

I agree Pev. I'd liken her more to Bush, who has never had anything but family connections to carry him and his ability to make people want to drink a beer with him. She doesn't even have the family connections.

I want to know where is the outrage from the public at the lack of coverage of Troopergate. Those statements above are spot on. ".....stereotypical portrait of a woman so in thrall to her emotions...".

Christ, if she didn't do it, then cooperate and fess up. If she didn't do it, then Troopergate is actually 1 lie she could correct which may even help her chances and image.

The fact that the Pale-In's are balking @ the inquiry is reminisce of any time Congress asked Bushy or any of the Cheney cronies to produce evidence or to testify.

Pale-In is and elitist wackjob and after Nov. 4th should quietly run back to Wasila and raise the dozen grandchildren she will have over the next 10 years.

If McPalin represents true feminism than I call this a farce. She in no way represents the fight that women such as Gloria Steinem and my mother included, fought for. It is because of these women that we have the rights we have today. McPalin would set back the women's movement back at least 50 years. In her mind it is okay if she doesn't bow down to 'big government', it's okay if she has a teenage pregnant daughter and harrassed her soon to be ex-brother in law due to a nasty divorce from her sister (gee, go figure). My question is, If she can't keep her emotions in check or keep her brood in line what the hell makes anyone think she can run the highest office in the land as veep? I am all for equality, but if you are going to tell your story McPalin tell the whole story. Please check out Mike Rupert's article/video and see what her constituents had to say about her neo-conistic ways. Information is power and the mainstream media, excuse me, Corporate media is not going to tell the truth. I recently have been watching V for Vendetta by the Wachowski brothers, check it out, the parallels are startling to current events. Be aware of our ever changing environment and be empowered.

She has few substantive accomplishments to point to on the issues that are important to voters right now - the economy, health care, education.

This author is being very generous... "few substantive accomplishments" I have not read of any....

If I am wrong repubs please correct me...(I'm sure you will)

Energy is the other big issue she has overstated her credentials there saying she is from a state that produces 20% of the oil for the lower 48 when it turns out it was 3.1%. Slight difference....

Thsi is a slap in the face of woman who work hard everyday to be taken seriously and to have her come in as a "pretty" yet unqualified pick sets us all back....

Not a republican here simmons518 but I do want to make sure you understand that Palin's misquote was that Alaska provided 20% of our energy needs which they do not. They do however produce between 15 and 20% of all oil produced in the US and it's waters.

It's still a lie either way.

JaRagga

respectully...

Palin claims Alaska "produces nearly 20 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of energy." That's not true.

Alaska did produce 14 percent of all the oil from U.S. wells last year, but that's a far cry from all the "energy" produced in the U.S.

Alaska's share of domestic energy production was 3.5 percent, according to the official figures kept by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

And if by "supply" Palin meant all the energy consumed in the U.S., and not just produced here, then Alaska's production accounted for only 2.4 percent.

Simmons518 thanks but I'm not sure what you're argument is unless you were challenging my statment regarding 15-20% of oil produced, if so then I point out this.

"Alaska did produce 14 percent of all the oil from U.S. wells last year, but that's a far cry from all the "energy" produced in the U.S.

Alaska's share of domestic energy production was 3.5 percent, according to the official figures kept by the U.S. Energy Information Administration."

Here is some very specific information on oil production but I stand by the 15-20% of oil production in the US coming out of Alaska.

I challenge ANYONE out there to submit 1 statement that has been uttered by Sarah Palin that can be characterized as one or either of the below: Intelligent
Witty
Truthful
Decipherable
Insightful
Accurate
Reassuring
Knowledgeable

Just as I thought....no response!

Uh, it's a bit facile to put "Just as I thought....no response!" within the body of the challenge.

It's incredibly easy to find statements uttered by Sarah Palin that can be characterized as truthful. Opinion statements are, by their nature, truthful. A statement such as, "I am pro-life and I believe that marriage should only be between and man and a woman" is truthful. It may not be a statement many of us agree with, but it is a truthful, accurate, and decipherable statement by Sarah Palin about her beliefs.

I mean, I get your point and all, but let's not be silly about it. I assure you, it's better to take the high road.
