Yusuf Islam, the former Cat Stevens, has quietly returned to music. And he's sounding a lot like ... Cat Stevens.
Thirty years after the folk singer converted to Islam, changed his name and dropped out of music, calling it un-Islamic, he has picked up the guitar once more.
"Wildworld," I loved that song. Thanks for the link Redruby. I was transported back to my high school days. It wasn't always fun, but the music was exellent!
It will be interesting to hear what kind of music he is doing now.
I listened to his album this morning. I wouldn't say there are any hits on it, but it's a good, solid album all the way through. It's fairly religious in places, but then again, cat was always spiritual/religious.
That said, he's still Cat Stevens. Being away from music for what, 30 years?, hasn't changed him musically at all.
I agree! I will have to look for that album. He was a definite favorite in my younger days. He had the total package a beautiful voice, meaningful lyrics and wonderful music. I was disappointed when he stopped putting out music. In listening to the new song it didn't even matter that parts of it weren't in english. It just sounded beautiful.
By a strange coincidence, Cat Stevens just came on as I was reading this article (I have my iPod on shuffle--over 3,000 songs, and one of his comes up!). I've always liked his music.
Thanks so much for this. I just spent a pleasant bit of time listening and watching.
It definitely took me back, back to the days when I taught myself acoustic guitar with his music, and that of a few other artists. But, here's where I gripe and grouch.
<gripe-and-grouch> No one ever told me-the-kid that I no chance of ever replicating what I heard on the albums. You see, I didn't SEE, as in didn't have any YouTube (or any other) videos available to me back then. I never knew that blond-haired guy on the right was the one actually playing the notes I felt I had to reproduce. Nor did I know the guy with the afro was there, (in the background, between the two, around 2:41 in the YouTube clip,) playing electric bass.
So there I was, me-the-kid, trying to replicate the 16 strings of that video on my feeble little 6-string.
<gripe-and-grouch>
But, I had fun, and frankly, I probably ended up a much better guitar player than if I'd known I was attempting to accomplish the "impossible", doing a lot more cross-picking or whatever than if I actually had had access to "movies" (then-era "video") of what they were playing on that YouTube excerpt. I would have been content to merely play the much-simpler part that Cat himself played, alone.
That said, did I enjoy the video immensely? Oh, definitely! That and many other it linked to. Thanks again.
I do wish I still had access to an acoustic guitar these days!
